Mikhail Bulgakov museum in Kyiv

Mikhail Bulgakov Museum on Andriivskyi Descent is not just a memorial space, but a living cultural center dedicated to the writer’s life and work. It attracts literary researchers, tourists, and all those fascinated by the mysticism of old Kyiv.

The challenge:  To create a modern website that serves as a digital business card, media library, and interactive platform for visitors. The resource needed to be user-friendly for tourists, researchers, and educators. The key was to convey the museum’s atmosphere, preserve its intellectual spirit, and ensure the site remained intuitive and accessible.

The project included:
– Visual concept inspired by Kyiv Art Nouveau and Bulgakov’s literary Kyiv
– Adaptive UI/UX design with a focus on navigation for tourists
– Integration with booking systems for tickets and guided tours
– Dedicated sections for educational programs, publications, and a digital archive
– Bilingual interface (Ukrainian/English)
– Easy content management for the museum team

The result:
The Mikhail Bulgakov Museum in Kyiv gained a modern digital home that strengthens its cultural presence online. The website bridges the museum and its new audience: it’s convenient for online booking, open to research, visually refined, and as alive as Bulgakov himself.

Grid system
In a neat design development, we used a grid with different quantitative columns for each type of device.
Mobile Version
The website was developed using a Mobile First strategy, meaning the mobile version was designed first, followed by the desktop version. This approach ensures faster loading times, unlike standard responsive adaptation where design elements are only scaled without reducing file sizes.
KyivType Sans TYPEFACE
We use KyivType Sans font for website interface. KyivType Sans font is brutal, intelligent, hipster and traditional. Using this font is the best variant to modernize a traditional museum without forgetting about traditions.
THE MAIN COLORS
Green is the color of Bulgakov’s lamp, which serves as a symbol of the museum. It was combined with other colors to create additional shades.
